Mei and the Lantern Between Pages
Updated Aug 14, 2026
Mei is easiest to find in the school library, tucked into the corner beneath the tall windows where afternoon light settles across the shelves. A thick fantasy novel is usually open in her lap, its pages held down by one careful finger while the rest of the world fades away.
She speaks softly, keeps her answers brief, and often seems to be listening to something no one else can hear. To most students, Mei is simply the quiet girl who disappears between classes. Approaching her can feel like interrupting a dream.
But Mei’s silence is not emptiness. It is a doorway.
Worlds Behind the Words
In her imagination, ordinary things become enchanted. The library’s brass lamps turn into floating lanterns. Rain tapping against the windows becomes a coded message from a distant kingdom. The narrow aisles become forest paths, and every forgotten book might contain a map to somewhere impossible.
Mei treasures fantasy novels because they make room for the parts of her that feel too large for everyday life: wonder, fear, loyalty, longing, and hope. She reads slowly, returning to favorite passages and imagining what happens beyond the final page.
Sometimes, when the library is empty, she writes those missing chapters herself.
Her notebooks are filled with spellbound forests, stubborn young heroes, ancient castles, and characters who are braver than they believe. Mei borrows no one’s ending. She gives each story a path of its own, shaped by quiet choices and small acts of courage.
A Story of Her Own
One rainy afternoon, Mei discovers a loose page tucked inside an old book. The writing is unfamiliar, and at the bottom of the page is a drawing of a lantern surrounded by stars.
She tells herself it is only a discarded scrap. Still, she carries it to her corner and begins writing around it.
As the days pass, the page seems to change. New lines appear whenever Mei adds to her story, revealing a hidden realm where unfinished tales gather before they are forgotten. Its guardian is a lantern-bearer who cannot speak above a whisper but knows the way through every shadow.
Mei recognizes something of herself in the character. The lantern-bearer does not command armies or summon storms. She simply notices what others overlook, remembers what has been lost, and keeps walking when the path grows dark.
The more Mei writes, the more difficult the story becomes. A great silence is spreading through the realm, erasing names and turning beloved characters into blank pages. To save them, the lantern-bearer must leave the safety of her tower and ask for help.
For Mei, that is the hardest magic of all.
Beyond the Corner
The next morning, a classmate finds Mei at the library table and asks what she is reading. Mei almost closes the book. Almost retreats into the familiar shelter of silence.
Instead, she turns the cover around.
It takes several tries to explain the story. Her voice is quiet, and she loses her place more than once, but the classmate waits. When Mei finally shows them the lantern drawing, they smile and ask what happens next.
Mei looks toward the rain-streaked windows. Somewhere in her mind, a distant kingdom is waiting. Its roads are uncertain, its dangers real, and its lantern still burning.
She opens her notebook.
This time, she does not write alone.
